Colorado Writing Heights Conference 5/11/25 – 5/14-25

Creativity at 8,500 Feet: My Week at the Writing Heights Writers Conference

There’s something magical about learning at high altitude—and the Writing Heights Writers Conference in Allenspark, Colorado delivered that magic in every possible way. Held at 8,500 feet with winding trails, wildlife sightings (yes, including baby moose!), and cozy spaces to write, this all-inclusive retreat brought writers together for four days of learning, community, and inspiration.

I taught two workshops this year:

1. Networking for Creative Writers

We covered everything from shifting your mindset around networking to the three types of connections every writer needs. Participation was incredibly high—people shared experiences, swapped strategies, and leaned into the idea of building a writing life that isn’t lonely but supported.

The biggest takeaway: Networking feels less scary when you focus on connection instead of perfection.

2. Mindset Over Manuscript: When Fear Holds the Pen

Fear shows up for all of us—procrastination, resistance, limiting beliefs, perfectionism. This workshop explored:

  • Understanding limiting beliefs

  • Jim Kwik’s Thought Cycle

  • High-quality reframing questions

  • The Thermostat Theory

  • How comfort zones shape our writing

  • Practical exercises to identify and challenge the thoughts that hold us back

Writers participated deeply, sharing stories, reflecting honestly, and asking powerful questions. One of the best moments was seeing people connect the dots between mindset and action—and realizing they’re capable of far more than they give themselves credit for.

There was laughter, a few tears, and so many “aha” moments. The mountain air helped, too.

This conference remains one of my favorite places to teach. Surrounded by nature, community, and creativity, it’s impossible not to grow.
